Everything You Need To Know About Tooth Sensitivity

December 2, 2015 by admin

Toothaches are not so uncommon. Many people suffer from toothaches, and the most common reason for it is the kinds of foods and drinks these people consume. Cold and hot beverages trigger tooth pain, and so do the hard snacks and acidic foods. Most people, however, do not know why consuming such foods and drinks causes discomfort and pain. Oftentimes, the explanation the dentist gives leaves patients scratching their heads about cervical hypersensitivity, or in simple terms, tooth sensitivity.

What is tooth sensitivity?

Despite being the hardest substance in the human body, teeth have nerves underneath, which are very sensitive. When these nerves are exposed to certain stimuli, like cold or hot drinks, they can bring even the strongest to his or her knees. The feeling is often a sharp and sudden one that sends pulses of severe pain throughout the jawline. Even though it may last for a moment, many individuals consider teeth sensitivity a serious disorder that needs medical attention.

Causes of tooth sensitivity

A gum disease that pulls your gums back (gum recession) is the primary cause of tooth sensitivity. When your gums pull away from your teeth, the sensitive nerves are exposed. In severe cases, patients must avoid any liquid or food that may reach these exposed nerves. Other things that lead to tooth sensitivity are:

•    Common wear. Brushing your teeth too hard or using a worn-out or hard-bristled toothbrush can, over time, damage tooth enamel and expose the dentin.

•    Tooth decay and cavities near the gum line, which expose the nerves.

•    Gum Disease. Gingivitis or gum disease can cause the gums to recede and expose the sensitive nerves of the teeth.

•    Teeth Grinding or bruxism can wear down tooth enamel and expose the dentin.

•    Whitening products. Some tooth-bleaching agents or sometimes ill-fitted mouth tray can irritate gum tissues, and thereby leading to sensitivity.

•    Prolonged mouthwash use. Some mouthwashes contain mild acids, which can affect both the gums and tooth enamel over time.

•    Acidic foods and drinks. Foods and drinks like citrus fruits, cola, pickles, tomatoes, etc. contain a high acid content which can damage tooth enamel and expose dentin.

Treatments for tooth sensitivity

Mild sensitivity, in most cases, can be addressed without a specific procedure. Here are a few simple things you can do to help control the sensitivity problem:

– Start using soft-bristled toothbrush

– Use a specific type of toothpaste that is made for individuals with sensitive teeth

– Limit the consumption of acidic foods and drinks

– Use a mouth guard to prevent teeth grinding

– Visit your dentist every six months

If the tooth sensitivity is severe, talk to your dentist. Your dentist may advise a suitable dental procedure that cures the problem once and for all. Fluoride treatment, dentin sealers and dental fillings are some of the most popular options for individuals with severe sensitive teeth.
