Are Your Teeth Discolored or Yellowish? Here Are the Villainism Reasons Behind It

November 18, 2019 by admin

Tooth / Teeth discoloration is one of the most common dental problems, which many individuals suffer at some point in time. A discolored tooth does not have a direct impact on your oral health, but it certainly can make you self-conscious. There are many reasons for teeth discoloration, but here are some of those, which are more common.

Reasons for Teeth Discoloration

1.Inadequate Dental Hygiene: Poor dental hygiene is one of the main causes of tooth discoloration. Not adhering to the practice of brushing and flossing properly every day to remove food particles and plaque can cause teeth discoloration.

2.Foods and Drinks: Many acidic and non-acidic fruits and vegetables, like blackberries, blueberries, tomatoes, and potatoes, can erode or damage the enamel of your teeth and cause stains. The same is true for certain drinks, like colas, wines, coffee, etc.

3.Tobacco Consumption: Consuming smoke or smokeless tobacco products can easily and severely stain your teeth.

4.Aging: Dentin, which is surrounded by enamel (the visible surface of your tooth), is yellow in appearance. As you age, the tooth enamel will naturally wear out to some extent, exposing the dentin and making the tooth appear yellowish or discolored.

5.Disease: There are some diseases that can affect the enamel as well as the dentin, leading to the discoloration of the tooth. Further, certain treatments (chemotherapy for instance) can also affect the color of your tooth.

6.Medications: Certain medicines, for instance, drugs for high blood pressure or antipsychotic drugs, can discolor your teeth. Further, some mouthwashes and rinses are also known to cause tooth discoloration.

7.Trauma: Trauma, for instance, a severe shock due to a fall, can disturb the formation of enamel in children whose teeth are developing. With the improper formation of the enamel, teeth are at a risk of discoloration. Trauma may even cause discoloration in adults.

8.Environment: Intake of excessive fluoride, maybe due to environmental sources, like high fluoride levels in drinking water, or due to the excessive use of fluoride-rich toothpaste or rinses can lead to teeth discoloration.

Tips to Stop Teeth Discoloration

Now that you know what commonly causes teeth discoloration, let us see how you can prevent it. The best way to counter teeth discoloration is by making just a few lifestyle changes. For instance, if you are used to coffee and/or tobacco, try to hold back or quit it all together. In addition to this, stick to a strict dental hygiene routine, which is brushing and flossing your teeth properly every day without fail. Getting your teeth cleaned professionally by an experienced dentist every six months is also essential.

In case your teeth appear to be of an abnormal color without any good explanation, make sure to see your dentist at the earliest.

Treatments to Whiten Discolored Teeth

Whitening discolored teeth is possible, but the treatment options vary depending on the cause of discoloration. Here are some of the common ways to whiten discolored teeth:

– Using over-the-counter teeth whitening kits
– Using at-home teeth whitening kits prescribed by a qualified dentist
– Dental bonding
– Dental veneers
– In-office teeth whitening treatments (discover more about it here)

The option of in-office teeth whitening treatments is the most effective and quickest way to whiten discolored teeth.
